The Save-Public-Education-Campaign Nigeria, SPEC, received with joy and relief, the news of the rescue of the remaining four Pupils of LEA Primary School, Alwaza, Nassarawa State, by Police in the State, in a rescue operation that Police authorities said was personally led by the Commissioner of Police in the State, C.P Maiyaki Muhammad Baba, on the 3rd of February, 2023. By this latest development, all the six abducted Pupils of the School, taken hostage by Bandits on the 20th of January this year have now been rescued and the Save-Public-Education-Campaign can confirm that they have all safely re-joined their families.
Convener of the Campaigner, Ms. Vivian Bello in her reaction said, “this is most welcome to us, we had been deeply troubled by the abduction of the very tender school kids and had campaigned vigorously for their rescue and freedom, and so we are indeed elated and relieved that by the effective steps and actions taken by both the state government and the Police with support from the Citizenry, that led to the breakthrough and return of the Kids back to their respective families and hopefully very soon, back to school to continue their Education”. She pointed out that “there is every need to protect School Children from trauma and disruptive elements and conditions and for Minors as those kids, it makes the need even more compelling”.
Bandits had on January 20th struck and carried away 6 School Children of the LEA Alwaza in Nassarawa State. The incident came on the heels of similar attacks on Schools in parts of the Country and the mass abduction of Students in the process. Data from UNICEF indicates that between December 2020 and March 2022, a total of over 1,436 School Children were abducted from Schools in Nigeria, effectively threatening Education in the Country, with various Stakeholders calling for concerted actions to stem the worrisome tide.
